The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the leadership of the National Assembly to discontinue the proposed social media restrictions and hate speech bills presently before it for consideration to become part of the extant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In a statement signed by CAN’s National Director, Legal and Public Affairs, Barr. Kwamkur Vondip and made available to newsmen yesterday in Abuja, expressed concerns that such bills were geared towards gagging the citizens from freely expressing their views on burning issues that affects them.
CAN noted that although many individuals, organizations and political parties have taken advantage of the Social Media to perpetrate evil and cause tremendous damage, there were adequate existing laws that could be used to check the excesses of individuals or groups misusing the social media and propagating hate speeches.
