The House of Representatives will on Tuesday (today) resume plenary after a two-month annual recess.
The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Sunday inspected the legislative chamber ahead of the resumption, in company with the Clerk, Rufus Giwa, and his technical team. The lower chamber of the National Assembly had gone on break on July 25, 2019.
It was gathered that topping the agenda of the House was the Appropriation Bill 2020, as the National Assembly had said they were ready to receive the budget from President Muhammadu Buhari this month.
The House would also debate the ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
Several members had mounted pressure on the leadership of the chamber to call for an emergency session during the holiday.
The House reportedly planned to grill the Federal Government officials directly involved in the affairs of Nigerians in South Africa who are under xenophobic attacks this week.
The House had suspended the plan to reconvene over the ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other nationals in South Africa
Instead, the lawmakers had summoned the officials to brief the parliament on the measures being taken by the Nigerian government on the matter.
Those already summoned by the federal parliament include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; the Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Kabiru Bala; and Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri- Erewa.
Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin
Kalu, in a message to our correspondent, said some lawmakers worked during the recess and that the parliament was ready to resume work fully.
Kalu said, “The Speaker, yesterday, inspected the chamber to ensure (that) everything was in place for our resumption on Tuesday. Many of our colleagues have been on the field doing great justice to their oversight functions in the various ad hoc committees they were assigned.
