TheManagement Services Department, Office of the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly held a one-day workshop for the staff of the federal legislature on the theme, ‘Awareness on Management -Union Relations’.
The workshop presentations dwelt on subtopics which addressed issues on employees’ rights and discipline, grievance procedures in workplace, and balancing employment & trade unionism; negotiation and collective bargaining, mediation and dispute resolution and others. It also featured interactive questions and answers sessions for members of staff to express their thoughts on the issues raised.
While declaring the workshop open, the representative of the Clerk to the National Assembly and Director, staff promotion and discipline department in the Directorate of Human Resources and Staff Development, Mallam Maidala Abdullahi Mutai charged participants to pay rapt attention to the resource persons so as to grasp the learning outcomes and apply same to improve in their job performance and formal relationships in the organization.
Earlier in a welcome remark, the Director, Management Services Department, Ms. Doris Joseph hinted that had become very necessary as an approach towards restoring stability and industrial harmony in the National Assembly work community. She noted the unfortunate scenario in the late months of 2018 when members of the parliamentary staff union, the PASAN (Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria) carried out industrial actions owing to strained management-labour relations. The director recognized the newly management executive-elect of the PASAN and expressed hope for a peaceful relationship between the union and the management.
